Prior to a divorce, separation, or abandonment, there are certain indicators that show that communication within a couple has deteriorated. These symptoms can anticipate significant difficulties both for the members of the couple and within the family environment.

1) Marital life exposed within the family

When family members comment on or gossip about marital life, this may indicate that the marital relationship is at risk of breaking down. In these situations, it is advisable not to become directly involved, as offering opinions about a relationship that is not one’s own can affect family relationships. The most appropriate option is to communicate to the couple, in a careful manner, how their attitudes impact family well-being.

2) Inappropriate comments to third parties

When one member of the couple shares disagreements with external parties, and these comments reach the other partner, they can trigger greater conflicts. This directly affects the couple and, if there are children, also impacts their emotional well-being.

3) Lack of respect in public

If grievances increase in intensity and one of the members begins to shout at or mistreat the other, disagreements may become irreversible, especially when the couple is not legally committed. These cases often result in abrupt separations, divorces, and family resentments.

The consequences of these conflicts do not end with the separation; affected households often transmit patterns of conflict to the next generation. These breakups impact mental health, disrupt emotional stability, and generate constant criticism toward those involved.

A longitudinal study conducted in Australia with adolescents from separated families identified three risk profiles: Well-Adjusted, Moderate Risk, and High Risk. Adolescents at moderate risk showed greater depressive symptomatology in emerging adulthood, while those at high risk exhibited a greater propensity toward antisocial behaviors. The majority were well adjusted, demonstrating differentiated trajectories of psychological vulnerability following parental separation and highlighting the need for therapeutic interventions tailored to each risk profile (Di Manno et al., 2018).

In these contexts, it is essential to seek professional support to understand, manage, and resolve communication problems. The main objective is to restore clear and timely dialogue, minimizing psychological consequences for all family members.
