What story are you repeating: yours or your parents’?
When a marriage ends in separation or divorce, the emotional breakdown of the family unit becomes evident. Those involved often fail to measure the emotional consequences this generates, both for themselves and for their children.
They mistakenly say, “My children are fine, they’re calm, there’s no problem, it doesn’t affect them.” They usually say this because, sadly, they already have another partner.
However, the emotional damage in those children is already present.
Those same children, when they become adults, thinking things will go better for them, unfortunately repeat the story of abandonment by one or both parents.
50% chance of repeating the story
According to research published by the American Psychology Journal, 50% of marriages end in divorce. Therefore, those children have the same probability of repeating their parents’ story.
This happens due to the unconscious repetition of behavioral patterns learned during childhood, or because they enter romantic relationships without having a healthy family model to rely on.
Likewise, even when people come from stable and solid marriages, their own relationships may also fail “by contagion.”
That is, by imitating behavioral patterns not based on healthy family relationships, or due to the influence of the environment in which these young people grow up.
What to do and how to respond to these challenges
The most appropriate solution is to educate yourself emotionally — to learn how to communicate and relate in a logical, empathetic, and orderly way.
It’s essential to establish behavioral patterns and boundaries based on the kind of family you want to build.
