During a separation, divorce, or any broken or failed relationship, there is nothing more painful than the sense of loss. The reactions of the victims of this emotional scourge include crying, yelling, swearing, and feeling suddenly out of control. They cannot think clearly because they are overwhelmed by suffering.
Abruptly, the family system changes for the worse. Questions immediately arise: Who is going to pick up the kids from school? How often should each parent have visitation with the children? How am I going to explain to my relatives and friends?
From the child’s perspective, the pain can be even worse. They often cannot talk to anyone because they are so young, and the parent who has been abandoned cannot always fulfill both parental roles. Some children will grow up carrying these emotional pains in their hearts. True love seems to be over, and in many cases, we see on television that this is happening to countless families around us. But what should we do?
- Set a long-term emotional goal for yourself and your children, and find the right professional help to move forward.
- Accept your own mistakes. This is the hardest part. Look inside yourself, examine your own behavior, and recognize how your actions may have contributed to the breakdown of the relationship.
- Change in every positive way possible. Do not waste your time only crying. Instead, focus on making your life—and your children’s lives—better than before.
- The most common causes of divorce include infidelity, and one of the most common explanations is, “We grew apart.” However, if you think more deeply about this phrase, you may conclude that people do not simply “grow apart” because they live under the same roof. More often, they stop communicating and stop loving their partners. In many cases, infidelity is the consequence of something important that has been missing at home.
- Learn to say, “I’m sorry,” to yourself, to your children, and even to your former partner. When we recognize that we were part of the problem, it becomes easier to change for the better because we can see where we have been and where we are going. We begin to shine through the light of forgiveness and the freedom that comes from our own wisdom.
If you need help overcoming relationship issues or communication problems, don’t spend all your time talking with friends or family members in a bar or a coffee shop. Lift your heart, take action, and seek professional help. We are more than happy to assist you because when the family system significantly changes, you must act quickly.
