Anxiety is a mental disorder that affects a person’s sense of calm. Among the symptoms it produces are agitation and distress that a person may experience. According to Danish physician Dr. Sune Straszech, when anxiety becomes generalized, it can lead to complications with other mental illnesses. He also stated in the 2015 digital magazine www.sundhed.dk that anxiety disorders are especially high among people who are separated, divorced, or widowed, with common factors including the loss of a romantic partner, early loss of parents, and unresolved emotional stress.
In the study presented in the book Dressed as a Bride?, by Teresa Ruiz Pedersen in 2018, it was found that, in 2015, statistics from the Danish Ministry of Health included the following:
-
Around 776,000 people visit medical clinics each year due to anxiety-related issues.
-
17,000 people are diagnosed with anxiety annually.
-
A total of 135,000 people live with this condition — more than 60% are women, and nearly 40% are men.
-
Over 7,000 people are hospitalized in psychiatric centers.
-
Nearly 127,000 people visit outpatient hospital departments. Among these, more than 8,000 people — or 7% — go to emergency rooms due to anxiety attacks.
-
Patients with anxiety symptoms represent 11% of all medical consultations in the country.
-
Almost 18,000 people are treated in emergency care.
-
Over 115,000 people are referred to specialists.
-
Annual medical expenses for treating this condition are estimated at 950 million Danish kroner.
-
The loss in productivity due to anxiety reaches 8.61 billion kroner each year.
The Importance of Emotional Intelligence
For these reasons, it is essential that people develop emotional intelligence, which allows them to learn from the past, overcome sadness, and move forward — supporting themselves and helping close family members build healthy emotional relationships.
